I had previously been told that the Government of Canada would not negotiate or deal with Hereditary Chiefs, but only with elected officials. I had not heard that the bands can “opt out” of the Indian Act election provisions and that, in fact, the majority HAVE opted out (333). I find this fascinating and it makes me wonder if any studies have been done comparing things like the standard of living, addiction and crime rates, etc. for bands that are following the Indian Act when it comes to band leadership, and those bands that have created (or maintained) their own codes…
